This session reviews the different types of heart murmurs that can commonly present in children. This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in July 2021.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain what a heart murmur is
  • describe the differences between innocent and pathological murmurs
  • assess the risk of a child being born with congenital heart disease
  • list the possible methods for investigating congenital heart disease

Innocent murmurs are very common, occurring in 80% of children at some time or another. Pathological murmurs can be a sign of congenital heart disease (CHD), endocarditis or heart failure. It is therefore important to be able to distinguish between the two types of murmur so that appropriate action can be taken early.
