This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in September 2020.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the key principles of immunisation
  • Answer queries about immunisation from parents and health professionals
  • Identify indications, contraindications and reactions from various vaccines

It is important to be able to identify and address the concerns that many parents have around vaccination and to have an understanding of the controversies around specific vaccines, such as MMR. It is also important to understand how to obtain informed and valid consent for a child to be immunised, and to explain to parents the common side-effects from vaccination.
