This session will give an overview of the problem of constipation and soiling in school-aged children. It will discuss the assessment process and treatment interventions and highlight the impact this distressing problem has on the child, their family and wider community.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe constipation and soiling problems in children
  • Describe the impact of faecal continence problems on families and children: financial, emotional, educational, psychological
  • Correctly diagnose faecal continence problems and describe the treatment of constipation and soiling
  • Outline principles of emotional and behavioural support for children with continence issues
  • Recognise red flag signs and know when to refer (e.g. non-retentive faecal incontinence) or involve multidisciplinary team members

June is a Paediatric Continence Specialist, working at Bladder and Bowel UK, under the umbrella of the charity Disabled Living. She has over 30 years experience working with children and young people with bladder and bowel problems.

June has published widely and presented papers both nationally and internationally as well as winning a number of awards for her work including in 2007 the Nursing Times Continence Care Award and finalist in 2011, 2013 and 2016. In 2011 she won the Nursing Standard Child Health Award. In 2013 June was runner up in the BJN Bowel Nurse of the Year and the winner of the ACA Bowel SIG Award.

In 1998 she was awarded an MBE. June has been involved with a number of national working parties both for the DH and NICE re continence issues and is currently a member of the NHS England ‘Excellence in Continence Care National Programme Board’.
