This session illustrates the importance of contraceptive choice for all women, lists the currently available choices and demonstrates the management of the contraceptive choice consultation in primary care.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in November 2019.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe all the available contraceptive methods and their key benefits and disadvantages
  • Compare the effectiveness of the different methods
  • Develop the skills to assess the appropriateness of the methods for an individual patient
  • Describe the differences between methods to facilitate patient choice

Most women require advice about contraception at some time during their fertile life. It is well documented that 80 % of contraception is provided in primary care. What statistics cannot tell us is what proportion of these women are offered a full choice of contraceptive options in primary care.
