This session describes shoulder problems commonly encountered in general practice, their diagnosis and management. It also describes how to assess the shoulder joint and how to identify the origin and cause of the shoulder symptoms. This session was reviewed by Sally Higginbottom and last updated in February 2015.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the significant impact of shoulder disorders to society and understand the common risk factors for shoulder disorders
  • Complete a holistic assessment of the impact of the shoulder pain on the individual, including psychosocial issues and risk factors
  • Describe the relevant physical examination used to identify joint or soft tissue shoulder problems and differentiate from other causes of shoulder pain
  • Identify red flags as they apply to the shoulder
  • Design an individualised evidence based management plan for the treatment of common shoulder problems, including referral pointers for imaging to allied health professionals and to secondary care specialists

Shoulder problems are commonly seen in primary care with up to one fifth of the elderly population having shoulder impairment. These disorders can cause considerable pain and are associated with significant impairment affecting a wide range of daily activities including dressing, personal hygiene, driving and the ability of an individual to continue his or her usual occupation.
