Assessment for Orthodontic Referral course for Dental Practitioners
This session aims to demonstrate how to identify and refer cases requiring complex orthodontic treatment and how to identify conditions in the mixed dentition not yet requiring intervention.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- identify and refer cases with unusual development status such as, cleft lip and palate syndromic conditions, facial asymmetry, ankylosis, supernumerary teeth and oligodontia
- identify and refer such cases as antero-posterior or vertical jaw discrepancy, excessive protrusion or retrusion of incisors, unerupted teeth, missing permanent teeth and severe tooth or arch discrepancy
- identify conditions in the mixed dentition not yet requiring intervention
Before commencing this session you should:
- have some experience in examining child, adolescent and adult patients
- know the normal sequence of dental eruption
- have an understanding of basic orthodontic terminology
- have completed the eDen session 1 Patient assessment/Assessment methods and techniques/A general orthodontic examination of the patient
Professor Willmot qualified at University College and UCH in London where he also did his orthodontic training. He obtained his PhD from Sheffield University. He has spent time in Oral Surgery, General Dental Practice and Paediatric Dentistry. He teaches at Sheffield University.
He was recently Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and now maintains a small private orthodontic practice in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
Derrick is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, heading up Module 7 Management of Developing Dentition.
Miss Stern qualified at University College and UCH in London and did her orthodontic training at the Royal London Hospital and Sheffield Dental Hospital. She has spent some time as a Specialist Orthodontist. She specialises in Cleft lip and Palate and Orthognathic orthodontics and teaches undergraduates and postgraduate.
