Learning objectives

  • describe what advanced imaging devices and techniques are available
  • outline where these devices might be used in dentistry
  • compare these devices with conventional techniques

As technology advances, more advanced techniques to aid the diagnostic process and facilitate better treatment planning become available.

  • Selection criteria for radiographic examination

Fiona Carmichael,
Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology

Fiona Carmichael qualified from Glasgow University in 1984. She obtained her FDS in 1988. After a spending some time as a lecturer in oral surgery, she started training in dental and maxillofacial radiology. She completed her training at Leeds Dental Insitute having obtained the DDR from The Royal College of Radiologists in 1996 and completing an MSc in Oral Pathology.

She was made a consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2000 at Leeds. She has been involved in previous teaching modules for the Royal College of Radiologists.
