Disorders of the Gastrointestinal Tract course for Dental Practitioners
This session will give you an understanding of basic anatomy, function, physiology and pathology of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) tract. It will discuss common conditions which can become chronic and can present with oral symptoms and signs.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain the normal anatomy, function and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract
- Discuss the pathology of the commonest gastrointestinal disorders
- Identify the signs and symptoms of these disorders in dental patients
- Explain the impact of these disorders in the provision of dental care
- Discuss the impact that dental care may have upon these disorders
It will also discuss the most common disorders and their pathophysiology, highlighting their manifestations in dental signs and symptoms, and the challenges they pose to successful dental care.
Andrew is a final year Surgical Registrar with a sub-specialty interest in HepatoPancreaticoBiliary disease.
Andrew also have a passion for medical education and has taught both medical and paramedical specialists in a number of different subjects, starting with Anatomy under Prof.H.Ellis, at Guys School of Anatomy, to Surgical Skills as faculty with RCPSG.
Ahmed is a Consultant Upper GI and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Lead Clinician, with a special interest in Oesophago-Gastric cancer.
Ahmed is involved in teaching medical students and doctors, both junior and senior, clinically and theoretically. He also contributes as a trainer and assessor to the London General Surgical Skills Programme, Imperial College, London.
