This session describes the basic clinicopathological features of benign tumours that present within the soft tissues of the oral cavity.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic clinical presentation of benign soft tissue tumours
  • Recognise the importance of clinicopathological correlation in accurate diagnosis
  • Identify the basic histological features of common benign tumours
  • List the differential diagnoses of soft tissue tumours
  • Describe the basic management of benign tumours

This session is a brief introduction to a range of benign soft tissue tumours that may present within the oral cavity. The range of diagnoses are broad and this session will concentrate on common lesions or those with characteristic clinical-radiological features.

Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Adam qualified at Cardiff Dental School in 2001 and undertook vocational training at Swansea. Following this he gained SHO experience in Periodontology, Oral Medicine, as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Subsequently, Adam was appointed as a Specialist Registrar/Honorary Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Sheffield NHS Teaching Trust/University of Sheffield. During this time, he completed his PhD on ’The role of ADAM – integrin interactions on epithelial cell behaviour’ and gained his FRCPath from the Royal College of Pathologists. Adam is now a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
