This session describes the contemporary use of removable orthodontic appliances in orthodontic practise.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Discuss the indications and contra-indications for the use of removable appliances
  • Appreciate the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the appliance
  • Identify the main components of removable appliances
  • Describe the stages in designing an appliance
  • Describe the instructions commonly given to a patient wearing removable appliances

Removable appliances have been used for many years in orthodontic practise. They may be used in the upper or lower arches, but are more commonly used in the upper arch.

James Grant BDS (Hons), MSc, MFDS RCS (Eng.), MOrth RCS (Eng.), FDS (Orth) RCS (Eng.),
Dental Consultant

James qualified in 2001 with BDS Honours from GKT. He then worked as a dental house officer at Guy’s Hospital in oral surgery and paediatric dentistry. The following year he spent as a SHO in Maxillofacial surgery. James subsequently worked in a general dental practise as a VDP. He then commenced his postgraduate orthodontic training at the Eastman Dental Institute gaining a MSc with distinction in 2006 and his MOrth in 2007. Then he worked as a FTTA at the Eastman and Kingston Hospitals, gaining his FDS in orthodontics in 2009. He is currently working as a consultant at Brighton Hospital.
