This session will introduce the concept of orthodontic aligners. The features of the appliance and its construction will be described alongside the indications for using aligners, and the advantages and disadvantages of the appliance.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the main features of aligner technology and explain how aligners are constructed
  • List the indications and contraindications for its use
  • Recall the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the appliance
  • Recall the different aligner systems currently on the market

Aligners are thin, clear, plastic ‘mouth guards’ which fit closely over the teeth. A series of these appliances are used to obtain incremental changes to straighten the teeth, according to a treatment plan developed by the orthodontist or dentist.
