This session will introduce you to the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This is the occlusal index most frequently used in the UK to determine whether a patient would benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of a treatment priority index
  • Describe the hierarchical scale used to apply the Index of Treatment Need Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC)
  • List the uses and limitations of the Index of Treatment Need Aesthetic Component (IOTN AC)

This session will look at why it is important to use an index to determine who will benefit most from orthodontic treatment. It will describe the key features of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which is the currently accepted orthodontic treatment priority index in the UK.

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Have completed the e-Den session in module 7 Management of the Developing Dentition/Orthodontic Indices/Common Classification and Indices of Occlusion and Malocclusion (141-0280)

Philip Benson,
Reader/Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics, University of Sheffield

Philip Benson was an undergraduate dental student at the University of Bristol. After several hospital posts, six months voluntary work in India and a period in general dental practice, he undertook the three year postgraduate orthodontic training at the University of Manchester. He was Lecturer in Orthodontics at Liverpool from 1995 until 2000, when he completed a PhD and moved to Sheffield as Senior Lecturer. His current research interests include clinical trials of treatment interventions and the validation of quality of life measures in orthodontics.

Fiona Dyer,
Consultant Orthodontist

Fiona Dyer BChD (Hons) FDS RCS (Eng) MOrth RCS, MClinDent (Sheffield) FOrth RCS trained at Leeds Dental School and graduated in 1989 with Distinction.

After house jobs and Senior house jobs in Maxillofacial Surgery, she spent 18 months in NHS practice in Bradford. She subsequently completed orthodontic training in 1997 in the South Yorkshire rotations, and Senior Registrar training between Sheffield, Chesterfield and Rotherham.

Fiona was a recipient of the MOrth Gold Medal Prize (1997) and Maurice Berman Prize (2001).

She was appointed as part-time Consultant Orthodontist in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2001, where she is currently the Training Programme Director for Orthodontics South Yorkshire and East Midlands. Since 2008, she has taken up one day per week in NHS orthodontic specialist practice.

She is currently Clinical Sub-editor for the Journal of Orthodontics and involved in two multicentre randomised controlled clinical trials.
