This session will describe the indications and techniques for primary molar pulpotomies and pulpectomies.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify clinical scenarios in which primary molar pulp treatment is indicated
  • Diagnose vital and non-vital pulp status
  • Explain the procedure for pulpotomy and pulpectomy
  • List the medicaments currently used for these techniques
  • Explain how to arrange appropriate follow-up for pulpotomy/pulpectomy

In order to successfully manage extensively carious primary molars, we need to be aware of the different pulp treatment options available for the primary dentition.

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • The difference in anatomy between the primary molar teeth and permanent molar teeth

Sophie Marshall,
Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry

Sophie is a specialty registrar in paediatric dentistry at East Surrey Hospital and King’s College Hospital. She obtained a BSc(Hons) in biological sciences from the University of Birmingham in 2006. Sophie then studied dentistry at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry as a graduate entry student. She qualified in 2011 with BDS(Hons) and went on to complete her vocational training in the London Deanery. Since qualifying Sophie has completed her MFDS(Ed).

Sophie completed dental foundation training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Kingston Hospital and paediatric dentistry and orthodontics at St George’s Hospital. She then worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in a career development post in paediatric dentistry.

Since May 2014 Sophie has been in post as a specialty registrar in paediatric dentistry, she regularly treats children as outpatients, under daycase anaesthesia, and on a emergency basis.

Emma Cole,
Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry

Emma is a Specialty Registrar in Paediatric Dentistry, based at Kings College Hospital, the Royal Alex Children’s Hospital in Brighton and Sussex Community Trust. She has recently been awarded an Honorary Lectureship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Emma graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2009. Following this, she worked as a Vocational Trainee in general practice in London. Then, she worked as a Dental Foundation Year 2 Trainee in Oral Surgery at Kingston Hospital, and Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at St George’s Hospital.

Emma then completed two years in Career Development Posts, the first in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and, following this, in Paediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital.

Prior to commencing registrar training, Emma worked as a dental officer within the Community Dental Services.

Sanjeev Sood,
Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher and Undergraduate Lead in Paediatric Dentistry

On graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2000 with his BDS, Sanjeev undertook General Professional Training in Glasgow where he worked in general practice for one year and then as a JHO at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. He then remained in Glasgow for a further year during which he successfully completed his MFDS exam from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Sanjeev started his specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry in 2003 in Dublin, where he also carried out his Master’s thesis on bonding to teeth affected by Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation. Following completion of his master’s degree and specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry he worked as a lecturer for the University of Dublin based in the Dublin Dental School and Hospital and was involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

He moved to Edinburgh in 2008 where he started his higher specialist training to become a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute and successfully passed his ISFE examination and was awarded with a FDS from the Royal College of Surgeons England.

He was appointed as Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher, Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at King’s College London Dental Institute in July 2011.
