This session describes the concepts and practical aspects of surveying and of cast analysis.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain how to analyse casts
  • describe the principles of surveying

This session will look at general aspects of cast analysis and basic principles of the surveying of dental casts derived from primary impressions (it is prudent to use primary casts in case tooth preparation is required prior to definitive impressions being recorded). The word impressions is deliberately used as both arches should be recorded and accompanied with an appropriate interocclusal record.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • have knowledge of tooth morphology and the basic concepts of occlusion
  • have completed Module 9 Replacement of teeth/Partial dentures/Mouth preparation and working impressions (141-09_04_004)
