This session provides an overview of the legislation applying to the use of ionising radiation in dentistry.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the legislation applying to the use of ionising radiation
  • List ways to minimise the radiation dose to patients
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to establish appropriate quality assurance procedures

This session will focus on the last two acts i.e. IRR 1999 and IR(ME)R 2000. The Health and Safety at Work Act is covered in the e-Den session in Module 12 Management and Leadership/Risk Management/Health and Safety in Dentistry (141-0479).

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Be aware of the imaging and selection criteria for radiographic examinations
  • Have an understanding of the basic science applying to ionising radiation
