Radiology – Integrated Training Initiative (R-ITI) | Paediatrics | How to Interpret the Paediatric Chest X-ray
How to Interpret the Paediatric Radiograph
Session Overview
Description
This is an introductory session outlining the basic principles of paediatric chest x-ray (CXR) or radiograph interpretation.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe a systematic approach to reporting the CXR
- List the most important patterns of radiological abnormality encountered in paediatric CXR interpretation
Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:
- Complete session in Module 5 Paediatrics/Thoracic Imaging Techniques (300-0439)
- Know the normal anatomy of the thorax
- Have a basic clinical knowledge of chest diseases in children
The CXR is the most frequently performed radiographic examination in children and correct interpretation is crucial in reaching the correct diagnosis.
Failure to appreciate the range of normal appearances at different ages, common artefacts and the influence of technical factors on the radiographic image may all result in errors in interpretation and inappropriate treatment.
This session will introduce you to a methodical approach in the evaluation of a CXR to ensure that important clues to the diagnosis are not overlooked.
