How to Treat quiz: Over the counter codeine use

Relevance to General Practice

Non-medical use of pharmaceuticals has increased. In 2013, 600,000 people misused painkillers, and OTC painkillers were more commonly used that prescription pain killers for non-medical reasons. The risks associated with the use of OTC codeine are poorly recognised within the community. People perceive OTC medications as ‘low risk’ because they are available in the pharmacy without a prescription. They do not recognise the risk of dependency and the potential for misuse and are likely not to be aware of other side- effects, for example constipation.
