Relevance to General Practice

Families commonly present to their GPs for advice about the timing of puberty, as this causes concern and distress. An understanding of the normal, and the variants, will allow GPs to investigate, refer and advise appropriately.
Recognising the signs of early puberty for prompt evaluation and management can maximise final height outcomes. It can also minimise negative psychological consequences of inappropriately early puberty and allow for prompt treatment of pathological causes of precocious puberty.
