This activity is the first instalment of a comprehensive three part series covering common orthopaedic conditions that affect infancy, childhood and adolescence. Part one covers gait assessment and foot progression, and identifies what is and isn’t within the normal range of development. In addition, this activity describes how to manage cases that fall within the normal range of development that require no treatment by communicating with parents and providing appropriate advice to them to ease their concerns regarding their child’s development. Whilst also detailing how to manage patients that don’t fall within the normal range and who requires referral to orthopaedic specialists.

Relevance to General Practice

General Practitioners require an understanding of normal gait development to assess key milestones in child development. They play a critical role in the early recognition and ongoing management of gait abnormalities in children. In the vast majority of cases these assessments will fall into the broad range of normal and require no treatment. However, the assessment of gait abnormalities requires knowledge of a range of presentations such as in-toeing, out-toeing, bow legs and knock knees in children and their correlation with age. This activity will equip GPs with the tools to conduct a paediatric gait analysis and assess the range of motion in order to decide whether the issue will resolve or if the GP needs to intervene and direct the child with structural abnormalities to an orthopaedic specialist.
