The NSW Rural Mobile Simulation Centre education program provides a simulation based experiential learning program for doctors, nurse and paramedics who work in rural and remote NSW Health facilities.

The program is managed by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). HETI supports education and training for excellent health care across the NSW Health system.

A key aspect of the Emergency Masterclass is to foster interprofessional education and training amongst rural doctors, nurses and paramedics.

The Emergency Masterclass focuses on the care of critical ill or injured patients who would present to a rural NSW Health facility.

The aim of Masterclass is to provide rural doctors, nurses and paramedics with an understanding of the management of acutely unwell or critically injured patients.

Learning objective

By end of the Emergency Masterclass participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate inter-professional teamwork including effective leadership and active team membership in emergency situations.
  • Apply the elements of good communication
  • Raise concern in an effective manner in an multi-disciplinary setting
  • Demonstrate proficiency in maintenance of oxygenation and ventilation through a structured approach to airway management
  • Demonstrate proficiency in maintenance of circulation in sepsis and trauma, including use of fluids, bloods and haemorrhage control techniques
  • Explain the retrieval process and understand the why and how of packaging a patient for retrieval
  • Locate the landmarks for insertion of a chest drain / thoracostomy and be able to perform the procedure of thoracostomy / insertion of a chest drain
  • Manage the care of the deteriorating patient due to trauma or sepsis
  • Describe drugs used in critical care

    There is no assessment component within this program. Learners will participate in simulation based activities and will be debriefed on performance post immersive simulation.
