Course Content

Nurses are often asked by patients and families about organ donation but few have actually worked in situations where the rules about donation are clearly understood.  While they do have a grasp of the essentials when faced with queries they are at a loss to explain the options and limitations that may affect a decision to donate tissue or organs.

The need for artificial feeding and the line between force feeding can, in patient care situations be troublesome.  Knowing the rights of clients to refuse nutrition and the obligations for making decisions about implementing and maintaining feeding regimes that are distressing or ineffective can lessen anxiety and conflict in care situations.
