Australia has identified several priority groups when it comes to sexual health care provision. Young people are one of these priority groups. As rural health practitioners it is prudent to provide health care to young people and also to know some of the ways to make this care provision more satisfying for you and your young patients. In this module you will hear from two rural health practitioners who have set up primary health care facilities in rural towns to focus on sexual health care for young people.
This module can be part of the ALM Facets of Rural Sexual Health Practice.
The majority of Sexual and Reproductive Health care is conducted by General Practitioners. This is a challenging area of medicine as it is a private issue for most patients and requires a sensitive approach and cross cultural mindfulness. The challenges can be intensified in rural and remote communities with overlapping relationships where health professional are very much a part of communities . This can lead to the perception of less confidentiality, which is not shown in research, but never the less important to address. The General Practitioner with a good understanding of issues facing rural sexual health practice will be more at ease to provide best practice medicine in this interesting yet challenging field.
