Medication Safety

Course Overview

All health practitioners who have any dealings with medications must ensure they are fully conversant with medication safety. This Mandatory Training Module will help the participant understand the principles of medication safety. The module is designed to facilitate the enhancement of the participants’ knowledge, skills and practice, in regard to medication safety and provide strategies to assist in closing any existing gaps.

Learning Outcomes

• Have increased knowledge of medication safety issues.
• Apply medication safety principles in your practice environment.

Target Audience

This medication safety module is intended for staff commencing at any level in the healthcare sector who, when working within their scope of practice, will have dealings with medications.

Validation of Learning:

• Evidence of recent continuing professional development you have undertaken on medicines you regularly administer.
• An evidence-based article you have read on a medicine review.
• A reflective de-identified story about how you have implemented your learning.

Educator

Anne Leversha

Anne Leversha is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and is Director of Medication Education and Management Australia. Anne is a clinical pharmacist, has been a Director of a hospital pharmacy and was a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University. She is a Fellow of The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA), is an Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) assessor and consultant and is a trained clinical competency assessor for hospital pharmacists. Anne has been a member of the Victorian Medicines Advisory Committee and was a member of the team that developed a national interdisciplinary clinical educator preparation program. She has presented and conducted seminars and workshops in national and international conferences and forums. Anne has published on topics, including improving medication safety with articles on high-risk medicines alerts, drug allergy documentation, clinical pharmacist interventions, and pharmacists’ contribution to medical education.
