Possums Education is a registered charity founded by Dr Pamela Douglas MBBS FRACGP IBCLC PhD. Dr Douglas is a GP and Medical Director of Possums Education. Possums Education offers health professionals the opportunity to upskill in Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC), also known as the Possums programs. NDC offers the latest evidence-based approaches to breastfeeding, cry-fuss problems, sleep and maternal mood, developed out of 15 years of research.
NDC is a genuine paradigm shift - we flip much of the popular advice parents receive upside down. Our programs integrate the very latest lactation science, including ultrasound studies on the biomechanics of infant suck, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, gut science, sleep science, attachment psychology and a new set of powerful psychological strategies known as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Our education opportunities include:
Our Masterclasses offer innovative, evidence-based skills - without unnecessary medicalisation. Learn about the latest understandings of infant suck swallow and breath coordination in breastfeeding, drawing on new work about the floor of mouth fascia and oral frenula; gain a deep understanding of the new gestalt approach to breastfeeding, derived from ultrasound studies; integrate effective strategies for decreasing cry-fuss behaviours, including at the breast; apply simple but effective strategies for supporting parental mental health; and help set families on a trajectory of easy sleep and optimal infant development from the very beginning of life.
Our education is suitable for the following health professionals: GPs; obstetricians; paediatricians; psychologists; midwives; child health nurses; nurses; social workers; occupational therapists; physiotherapists; speech therapists; lactation consultants.
