While there’s no official boundary that separates this region from the rest of the state, it’s generally the area surrounding Townsville – which is sometimes referred to as Queensland’s second capital, some 1300 kilometres north of Brisbane, and includes other major regional centres of Charters Towers, Burdekin, Palm Island and Hinchinbrook. The region features rainforests, sandy beaches, outback bush, the Great Barrier Reef and the benefits of city life.

The economy in the region has been experiencing strong growth and is being bolstered by government investment to create and improve infrastructure. Townsville is a major commercial centre supporting the region’s major industries of agriculture, mining, refining, defence, tourism, transport and education.  Health care and social assistance, public administration and safety and the retail trade sectors are the region’s biggest employers.

Townsville is about a 15-hour drive from Brisbane. It has an airport with flights in and out to Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Cairns and Melbourne. Queensland rail’s high speed Tilt Train also services the city.
