Aboriginal Health Worker vacancy in Mount Isa

Gidgee provides a broad range of primary health care services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the region; including GPs, Nursing; Aboriginal Health Workers / Aboriginal Health Practitioners; Allied Health professionals; Maternal and Child Health; and visiting Medical Specialists.

Gidgee also provides a range of family-focused Mental Health and Wellbeing services, as the lead agent for both headspace Mount Isa and the Normanton Recovery and Community Wellbeing Service. Gidgee is currently experiencing a period of very strong organisational growth; expanding the scope and frequency of the services it provides across the Mount Isa and Lower Gulf regions.

A significant proportion of the Primary Health Care and Maternal and Child Health Services historically provided by mainstream providers across the region are now transitioning to a community-controlled model of care to be delivered by Gidgee Healing.

Section Criteria

  • Understanding of and adherence to the principles of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health services, including a high level awareness of health issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in rural and remote locations; an understanding of how 'whole-of-life' and social circumstances can impact on health, wellbeing and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health services and the issues facing these organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage workloads in order to meet agreed timelines and objectives
  • Ability to demonstrate good clinical skills
  • An ability to communicate and empathise with Aboriginal people
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of primary health care
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of professionals and the public, as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise and work with local communities and relevant Government and non Government organisations.
  • Effective communication skills - written, verbal and interpersonal
  • Computer literacy, including use of client record systems, electronic communication and word processing.
  • Desirable:

  • A local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person, with established connections to the region.
  • Minimum Certificate III, preferably Certificate IV, in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice).
