As Staff Specialist General Surgeon you will work in collaboration with the Director of Surgery to provide clinical care to patients ensuring that the highest quality of care is delivered in the most professional and ethical manner.
The Surgical Ward has 15 beds and a Day Surgery Unit. Surgical patients may also be accommodated in the 5-bed High Dependency Unit. Surgical consultative services are provided to the 24-bed Medical Ward and 18-bed Maternity Unit.
The Hospital is the District's major referral centre providing a broad range of secondary level services in Emergency, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Intensive Care, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. The hospital has a fully equipped and staffed Intensive Care Unit. Surgical operations are undertaken by visiting specialists and staff surgeons with the support of a staff anaesthetist. A full obstetric and gynaecological service is provided and supported by specialist medical and nursing staff. A limited neonatal service is available.
There are 2 operating theatres and over 140 operations are performed each month with approximately 50% being acute surgery. Procedures are performed in both adults and children, in the speciality areas of General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Orthopaedics, acute trauma, ENT, minor Vascular, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Dental.
The town has a population of 25,000 and despite being a small town is multicultural with more than 50 nationalities calling it home. It is well served with amenities, having a number of private and public schools and a college, excellent shopping, dining and entertainment and an airport with daily flights to Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns for when you want to go further afield. The town is home to the Southern Hemisphere’s largest rodeo and is a real country town with some kind of fair or rodeo every month.
Within easy reach are a number of national parks and Lakes Moondarra and Julius allow recreational pursuits such as water-skiing, canoeing, picnics, swimming and great fishing for anglers. Set off on an adventure and explore the vast Australian Outback, visit breathtaking gorges, admire the multitude of wildlife, explore fascinating ancient rock paintings, and go in search of fossils from pre-historic times. The area brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to explore, fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy a romantic Outback sunset. The Northern Territory border is only a 2 hour drive away and Alice Springs and Uluru are also options for a weekend away.
In order to be eligible for this position you must have FRACS or be close to obtaining your fellowship with AHPRA registration.
