Brophy Family and Youth Services are seeking an enthusiastic medical professional to manage the Headspace in Portland and lead a team of multidisciplinary professionals and ultimately use their experience to deliver innovative mental health services.


Brophy Family and Youth Services is a quality accredited not for profit organisation, with a community based Board of Directors. The service aims to provide a wide range of family, youth and children services across South West Victoria. As a multi-site organisation, employees may be required to work at any of their 5 sites with given notice and arrangement.

Division and program review:

The Health Services Division at Brophy provides early intervention health services across the south west region that includes the following programs:

  • Headspace provides early intervention health services to young people aged 12 – 25 years along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

  • Doctors In Secondary School (DiSS) – Brauer College students.

  • Psychological Therapy Services in Warrnambool for 12 years and under; 12 years and over and suicide prevention.

  • Drug and Alcohol Responding Early (DARE) for young people at risk of substance use aged 12 – 25 across the south west region.

  • WILD adventure therapy program for young people aged 12 – 25 at risk of substance use and mental health problems.

Key responsibilities/primary purpose of role:

  • Deliverance of 0.5EFT of psychological interventions (individual and/or group work models)

  • Overall responsibility for the management and coordination of the headspace Portland satellite service

  • Ability to provide daily operational support and guidance to a multidisciplinary team

  • Lead delivery of an evidence-based primary mental health service case load and development of innovative and recovery orientated group work models

The Manager will work collaboratively with stakeholder partners through effective relationships, co-contribution service level agreements and referral arrangements between primary care, mental health, alcohol and other drug, vocational services and other psycho-social services to facilitate young people’s access to the right service at the right time.

Key Selection Criteria


  • Tertiary level qualifications in an  Allied Health discipline including Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Nursing or Occupational Therapy

  • Current full registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) or Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or equivalent professional regulation body

  • Eligibility to deliver services under the Medicare Benefits Scheme and other funding streams relative to the headspace model

  • A current valid Driver’s License

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Minimum of fiver years’ experience and advanced level clinical leadership skills in a range of mental health care service setting

  • Experience in complex clinical triage, assessment and referral

  • Demonstrated experience in the leadership of multidisciplinary teams, including the provision of clinical supervision and the facilitation of clinical review and performance management processes.

  • Advanced clinical skills in managing young people at risk, including suicide and violence risks.

  • A broad understanding of the mental health service system in the state and national reforms, and knowledge of relevant legislation.

Practice Details:

Brophy Family and Youth Services is the primary provider for youth and family services in South West Victoria. Brophy originated in 1974 with its beginnings in hostel accommodation for homeless youth. Over the years, it has developed a comprehensive range of services for young people, individuals and families. The agency provides regional services to Portland, Hamilton, Camperdown, Warrnambool and districts through its outreach programs. Its main office is located in Warrnambool and sub regional offices in Hamilton and Portland.

Portland became Victoria’s first permanent European settlement in 1834. Today it boasts more than 200 beautifully maintained heritage buildings and private residences. Whale watching is a favourite pastime for locals and tourists; Southern Right and Humpback whales visit during the winter months, and huge Blue whales during the summer.

For those who like fishing, Portland is an angler’s paradise. From a boat or the beach the range of fish that can be hooked is extensive. Portland also has some of the best surf this side of Bells Beach. The choice spots are Bridgewater Bay, the Watertower, Blacknose, Crumpets, Yellow Rock, Whites Beach and Murrells. Beginning and ending at Portland is the 250km Great South West Walk with stunning forests, river gorges, capes and beaches along the way.
