VMO Jobs Requirements

Bourke Street Health Service (BSHS) VMO’s provide continuous medical coverage to the 18 bed Palliative care, Rehabilitation and Aged care ward. To ensure coverage there are workable arrangements between the Management of the Health Service and the Visiting Medical Officers (VMO’s).

VMO’s On Call MUST ensure that they are contactable at all times unless other prior arrangements have been negotiated.
On Admission it is expected that all patients will be admitted within 12 hours of their arrival at BSHS. Palliative patients admitted directly from home may require an urgent admission so that pain relief can be documented and administered. This will be coordinated through the Community palliative care team with the On Call VMO.

Palliative Care Patients should be seen – daily or as coordinated with community palliative care
Rehabilitation Patients should be seen – daily for the first week then 2- 3 times per week.
Maintenance Patients should be seen – weekly.
Visiting Medical Officer is On Call for a 24 hour period to provide medical care for those patients requiring admission, and to provide non routine care of inpatients of the Health Service.

The VMO On Call is determined by the VMO Roster.  The VMO roster is developed monthly and will be published prior to the end of the current roster. The VMO On Call will attend the BSHS once a day whilst On Call on Monday to Friday and attend to any clinical requirements.  On Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays the VMO On Call will phone and attend if required.

Preferred days to be On Call need to make in writing prior to the new roster being published and availability will be taken into account when developing the roster The VMO On Call will communicate with the patients VMO should there be any changes in their patient’s condition.

It is the Registered Nurses responsibility to assess all patient emergency/acute situations and to inform the VMO On Call of the medical condition of the patient ensuring a verbal history and nursing diagnosis and treatment. If a patient requires urgent review the VMO is to attend immediately if possible and a discussion should take place with the Registered nurse regarding the appropriate action.

It is the Registered Nurses responsibility to verbally inform the On Call VMO of all planned and unplanned admissions to the Facility during the On Call period.   The VMO should be contacted by the patients physician at the discharging hospital prior to their accepting the patient and provide a hand over. The VMO On Call will endeavour to attend all new admissions as soon as possible after being informed of the patient’s admission to the Facility.
