Katherine is situated on the Katherine River, 320kms southeast of Darwin (roughly a three-hour drive away). Through the Nitmiluk National Park, the Koombolgie sandstone escarpments, gorges and rock paintings too are accessible from here.

Katherine is largely well-connected and lies at the crossroads of the Savannah Way. The Ghan, run by Great Southern Railway, operates on the new extension between Adelaide and Darwin arriving twice weekly. The Katherine airport provides further accessibility.

There is one general medical clinic, Kintore Clinic, and GP appointments are available here. There is also one indigenous medical clinic and numerous community health facilities in the area. The Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service offers treatment and care for indigenous patients.
