Practice Information
This practice is a mixed billing, rural General Practice providing a range of services from semi-emergency to general and family medical care. Their chronic disease management process provides patients with the best option for continuity of care and is a high priority throughout their service profile along with (but not limited to):

  • Health checks
  • Immunisations
  • Family planning and antenatal shared care up to 38 weeks
  • Workplace medicals
  • Excisions and basic skin procedures and cryotherapy
  • ECGs
  • Spirometry
  • 24hr and 7 day holter monitoring

Their mission is to provide comprehensive, non-discriminatory and holistic medical care, to the highest standard, within the boundaries of general practice and skill set available amongst staff. They are committed to providing care particular to the patient and their significant others, with dignity and respect, and in a timely manner.
The Practice facilitates an on-site pathology service with QML Pathology and hosts specialist telehealth appointments as well as visiting allied health professionals including Podiatrist, Diabetes Educator, Dietitian, Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology and Mental Health Nurse. They have a visiting sleep technician providing patients with at home sleep apnoea testing and CPAP supply and they also provide at home 24hour cardiac monitoring and blood pressure monitoring.
They are located on the grounds of the Monto Hospital. Monto hospital provides 14 acute beds with an allocated two full time Medical Officers. Both of these doctors are also GPs at this practice . While the practice is run from a separate building to the hospital, we share a parking lot and patients can be easily transferred between the two facilities either on foot or by wheelchair. After hours emergency care is covered by Monto Hospital also.
Monto’s local aged care facility, Ridgehaven Nursing Home provides 36 beds, catering for both low care and high care needs and is located within walking distance of the hospital and general practice. Monto’s nearest major health centre is Bundaberg (approximately 200 kilometres away) where most patients access specialist care. Bundaberg Base Hospital provides public health and private care is available at either the Friendly Society Private Hospital or the Mater Misericordiae Private Hospital. Patients requiring transfer to Bundaberg Base Hospital are usually transferred via road (about a 2.5 hour drive), or by Royal Flying Doctors Service (utilizing both helicopter and standard aircraft) where necessary. X-rays are available at Monto Hospital, however patients are required to travel to nearby Biloela (approximately 1 hour away) for ultrasound and Bundaberg for CT or MRI scanning, etc. Nuclear medicine is available in Bundaberg also.
About Monto, 
Monto is a small rural community in Queensland located approximately 200 kilometres west of Bundaberg and 235 kilometres south of Rockhampton. With a district population of approximately 1800, Monto’s predominate industry is primary production with a strong focus on beef, pork and cropping. Our small business precinct caters for all everyday needs with 2 grocery stores, a newsagency, pharmacy, clothing and many other specialty stores. The town boasts 4 primary schools (including outliers) and a year 7-12 state high school. The Monto district is home to picturesque Cania Gorge National park and gateway to other historical sites such as Monal Goldmines, Glassford Chimneys and Mines, and the WWII Bomber Beautiful Betsy plane wreck at Kroombit Tops.
Monto is classified Modified Monash Model (MMM) 5 and falls within a Distribution Priority Areas for GPs. Our close knit community includes smaller numbers of Indigenous Australians and other nationalities, the highest concentration of which is Filipino. Our weather in somewhat diverse. Summers are warm with average high temperatures around 35°C. Winters bring cold mornings with regular frosts but winter days are commonly warm and sunny with temperatures averaging around 20°C.

Position Description

Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality, primary health care services to the community, in keeping with best practice standards;
  • Provide appropriate care and services to patients of all age ranges and level of health care needs while being courteous and respectful to the patients cultural beliefs and needs;
  • Respond to medical/health problems presented by patients including history taking, diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate;
  • Provide after hours, on call and hospital services as rostered if applicable;
  • Provide management of long-term conditions in line with national guidelines and pathways;
  • Prescribe for patients as appropriate to need;
  • Provide appropriate health promotion and preventative health care advice to all patients attending the practice;
  • Ordering diagnostic tests as required;
  • To apply basic life support skills where required;
  • To take into consideration the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse patients, as well as patients who may have a disability;
  • To provide medical reports for worker’s compensation insurance companies, Motor Accidents Insurance Board, Department of Veterans Affairs and others;
  • To become familiar with and use the Medicare Item Numbers as applied at the practice and to keep up to date with new item numbers, changes to item number requirements, SIPs and incentive payments.
  • Referring patients to other providers as appropriate.

Record and maintain accurate, adequate and relevant patient records, in a timely manner, using the established practice protocols and computerised medical records system, including but not excluding details of:

  • Specialist referrals
  • Previous health and family history
  • Prescriptions
  • Investigations
  • Treatment
  • Diagnostic results
  • Registers and recalls
  • Actively communicate and coordinate with colleagues, specialist services and allied health professionals when sharing the care of a patient.

Working Collaboratively with Colleagues

  • Collaborating with regards to rosters and providing cover to ensure patients’ needs are met.
  • Working constructively and harmoniously with all staff to ensure patients receive optimal care.
  • Involvement in practice accreditation activities.
  • Participating in centre-based audits and activities.

Safety and Quality

  • To adhere to the practice work health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Ensure immunisation status is kept up to date;
  • Record incidents and near-misses in line with practice policy;
  • Practice duty of care including meeting practice standards and accountability;
  • Maintain patient and practice confidentiality at all times;
  • To participate in clinical meetings within the practice, and may include other meetings on occasion;
  • Respond openly and follow up complaints or feedback;
  • Identify and respond to unsafe practice (e.g. implement interventions to prevent unsafe practice and/or contravention of law);
  • Identify and appropriately respond to ethical dilemmas in accordance with practice policy.

Orientation & Induction

  • It is an expectation that you will participate in our practice induction.

Hours of Work:
The General Practitioner is required to participate in the general practice roster including weekends and public holidays as rostered in accordance with the practice policy (if applicable).


  • An average of 38 hours per week pending on call roster for hospital
  • Lunch breaks of one hour taken between 1200hrs and 1400hrs.

Additional Information
Probationary period: Three (3) months

This practice will monitor the activities and responsibilities of the position and formal evaluation of the position will take place annually.

Qualifications and Experience

  • The general practitioner is required to be appropriately trained and experienced in the discipline of general practice, and assessed as competent for the position in rural Australia;
  • Vocational Recognition through Fellowship with either the Royal Australian college of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or a recognised equivalent or; Acceptance to a GP Training Program such as AGPT, RVTS, ACRM Independent Pathway or RACGP Practice Experience Program and working towards Fellowship with either the Royal Australian college of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), or a recognised equivalent;
  • The general practitioner must abide by all legislative acts governing medical practice in Australia and
  • Comply with Registrar training if applicable.
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development by:
    • Maintaining professional knowledge and standards through continuing medical education and personal professional development
    • Maintaining a working knowledge and keeping up to date with changes to legislation and standards of general practice.

Selection Criteria
The general practitioner will be required to provide evidence of:

  • Relevant and Australian recognised medical degree;
  • Current and appropriate registration with the Medical Board of Australia, or eligible for such;
  • Applied knowledge, skills and experience in general practice as appropriate for the position;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a strong grasp on the dynamics of communication and conflict resolution;
  • Well-developed skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising workload;
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Familiarity with computerised medical records;
  • Satisfactory participation in quality improvement and continuing professional development to at least the same standards as the Royal Australia college of General Practice’s (RACGP) Quality Assurance and Continuing Professional Development (QA & CPD) Program;
  • Training in CPR, undertaken within the past three years;
  • Training in medical emergencies, undertaken within the past six month (if required for the position);
  • Current Medical Indemnity Cover or be eligible for such;
  • A current Criminal Record Screening; and
  • A Current Queensland Driver’s License

Overseas Trained and Restricted
The general practitioner will be required to provide evidence of:

  • Primary source verification of medical qualifications (EICS verification)
  • Work rights in Australia or be eligible for such.
