About Mawarnkarra Health Service (MHS)

Mawarnkarra (MHS) is the largest primary health care provider providing direct services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in the Roebourne area. MHS provides the families of Roebourne and surrounds, with a fully functional and accredited Clinic that treats approximately 3,500 people per year.

The Position

The General Practitioner role is part of the Clinical Services Team of Mawarnkarra Health Service. Mawarnkarra Health Services, a Community Controlled Organisation, is a primary health care service, managed by the local Aboriginal community, to deliver holistic, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate health and disability care to communities in the Pilbara. Our services are delivered through physical locations, mobile outreach and online/telehealth modes. Our operations are supported by administration, management, software and infrastructure to deliver best practice service.

The role of the General Practitioner is to, in collaboration with the Senior Medical Officer, as well as other managers and staff, implement the objectives of the organisation by ensuring clinical services deliver a supportive, high‑quality, effective and efficient service and to ensure that Mawarnkarra meets the health needs of clients and the community.

Duties

1.  Cultural Safety and Trauma Informed Care

     Demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal community–controlled health services and the principles of self-determination.

    Ability to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

    Willingness to engage with local community, Elders, Aboriginal Health Workers and cultural mentors.

    Commitment to ongoing learning in Aboriginal health, cultural safety and Closing the Gap priorities.

2.      Chronic Disease and Population Health Management

    Experience in evidence-based chronic disease management, care planning and team-based models of care.

    Understanding of preventive health, early intervention and population-level health improvement strategies.

    Ability to use recalls, reminders and audit data to improve clinical outcome.


3. Clinical Governance and Risk Management

    Participate in peer review activities with the medical team.

    Understanding of clinical governance frameworks within primary health care and AMS settings.

    Ability to identify, escalate and manage clinical risk, adverse events and near misses including documentation of these incidents within Promapp.

    Participation in incident review, morbidity and mortality review, and system-level improvement.

    Contribution to policy development, clinical protocols and safe systems of care.


4.  Digital Health and Clinical Information Systems

    Competence in the use of Communicare electronic medical record systems and digital clinical workflows.

    Understanding of My Health Record, My Medicare, secure messaging, telehealth and Medicare digital requirements.

    Ability to support data quality, accurate coding and meaningful use of clinical data for population health and reporting.

    Understanding of Proda and Medicare Billing requirements with a view to optimising medicare revenue.

5. Quality Improvement and Service Development

    Experience participating in continuous quality improvement activities beyond minimum accreditation requirements.

    Ability to identify service gaps and contribute ideas for service redesign or innovation.

    Engagement in audit, evaluation and improvement cycles aligned with organisational strategy

Requirements

    Full working rights within Australia and with no restrictions

    A recognised program of general practice training and hold Fellowship with either the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM)

    Current AHPRA Registration.

    Ability to negotiate complex social and health issues with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

    Be willing to relocate to the region

    Current Australian Driver’s License

    A current or be willing to obtain, a Working with Children Check

    A current or be willing to obtain, a National Police Check no less than 6 months old.

    We require someone from 1st July 2026 onwards for a minimum of 12 months.


Remuneration Benefits include:

This position comes with fully furnished accommodation, fully serviced and maintained vehicle and mobile phone.

    Base salary - $280,000.00

    District allowance - single $3,055.65 or family $6,111.30

    Annual Airfare Allowance (after 12 months continuous service) - $1000

    Superannuation - 12%

    37.5 Hour working week, Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.45pm.

    50% of Practice Billing Incentive available
