Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC)

Are you a Dentist, Dental Therapist or Dental Assistant who has thought about being part of the effort to close the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders health outcomes?

RAHC has numerous opportunities throughout the year for oral health professionals to undertake short-term paid placements ranging from three weeks to three months in remote First Nation communities in the Northern Territory (NT).

Before you commence your application please go through the requirements for either Dentist, Dental Therapist or Dental Assistant.

RAHC placements

As a RAHC health professional, you will work as part of a supportive team to deliver primary healthcare in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the NT. You don’t have to give up your regular job or practice to work with RAHC, as RAHC placements work around your other responsibilities. If you have urban-based experience as a Dentist, Dental Therapist or Dental Assistant you already have the skills you need to start making a difference.

Remote or Indigenous health experience are not required to work with RAHC.

RAHC training and support

RAHC provides cultural orientation prior to your first placement. RAHC also offers free eLearning, including an Oral Health module, prepared with the assistance of the NT Department Of Health Oral Health team.s. RAHC’s eLearning is a great, free resource for any health professional interested in learning about remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders health.

On your dental placement you will have 24/7 support from RAHC’s dedicated team which includes clinical staff with remote experience. As part of the health centre team, you will also have the support of other health professionals such as GPs, RNs and Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) all working to help improve health outcomes for First Nation Australians.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a RAHC placement you must:

  • Already be registered to practice (unrestricted) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) if you are a Dentist or Dental Therapist
  • Have a minimum of two years’ experience as a Dentist or Dental Therapist or six months experience as a Dental Assistant
  • Remote or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders health experience is welcomed but not essential.

The full credentialing criteria is available on the eligibility tab.

Get involved.

If you would like to get involved or have been thinking about applying, now is the time to start.

If you are an urban-based Dentist, Dental Assistant or Dental Therapist who meets the eligibility requirements, you can already start making a difference. When you get involved, you will have the opportunity to experience something different that could expand your scope of practice. You will also have the opportunity to learn about and experience Australian's First Nation's culture.

You can be part of the effort to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders health outcomes in the Northern Territory. Apply now.
