Clinical Competencies and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated high performance and competence in all clinical aspects of dentistry with sound clinical reasoning, advanced problem solving skills and extensive experience with the management of complex patient presentations.
  • Ability to provide a highly advanced range of efficient dental services, rarely requiring support or advice from more Senior Clinicians: (eg: minor soft tissue surgery such as biopsy; advanced endodontic procedures seldom necessitating referral to specialists).
  • Ability to provide advice to general Dental Practitioners, students and the team and accept referrals.
  • Manage patient complaints, establish (where required) and maintain clinical guidelines, pathways and policies.
  • Provide direct patient care in accordance with relevant standards, policies and activity targets as outlined by Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV). - Provide a local General Anaesthetic (GA) service within AWH and in line with AWH Credentialing requirements, support clinical staff to develop the skill set to also support a local GA service.  

Professional Development, Teaching, Mentorship and Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development with experience and willingness to participate in research opportunities, teaching, mentorship and supervision of dental team members and students as required.
  • Complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities pertinent to the core business of the dental service to better support the staff clinically and to enhance skill set development. - Engage effectively with key stakeholders including Universities representatives to support the student dentistry program.
  • Engage effectively with the AWH Education Department to support service wide educational requirements and best practice with the delivery and support of education, training and research.   

Clinical Governance Responsibilities:

  • Participate and lead quality and safety initiatives as well as audit and reporting requirements as indicated from DHSV, AWH or as required with documented outcomes and recommendations regarding clinic efficiency, safety and quality.
  • Ensure high quality clinical care is provided within a public dental context by Clinicians and students, in line with DHSV and AWH policy, scope of practice, national standards, clinical practices and protocols.
  • Ensure all clinical staff are up to date with credentialing requirements and periodical audit and report on Clinician scope of practice.
  • Development and leadership of processes to improve the quality of care, improve and minimise risks, fostering an environment of excellence in care for patients and to safeguard high standards of care.
  • Ensuring all safety and mandatory reporting requirements are completed including child safety and protection matters and vulnerable populations. 
  • Work in a spirit of partnership and open disclosure and effective communication with patients and within the team.
  • Undertake the role of Representative Public Dentist for AWH when required to support key initiatives such as the Child Dental Benefit Scheme.
  • Manage and assist resolution of clinical complaints.
  • Identification and delegation of appropriate cases to students and staff within their scope of practice.
  • Liaise with the Infection Control Department at AWH and ensure the dental service is meeting established national guidelines.
  • Manage and process patient records in accordance with the AWH Clinical Record process and policy and the Health Records Act and Dental Board of Australia Guidelines on Dental Records.   

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction for the daily clinical management of the Dental Service.
  • High level written and verbal communication skills, supervisory and mentoring skills, ability to undertake staff reviews, and ability to assist the Program Manager with the interpretation of business and activity reports as related to the Dental Service.
  • In collaboration with the Program Manager and Senior Dental Assistant, provide assistance with the physical, human and financial resources in an efficient and effective manner to provide optimal public dental health services to the community and to ensure that service delivery targets are achieved. 
  • Participate and lead the provision of outpost services as determined by the Dental Program.
  • Lead, coach and develop staff, ensuring the achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Represent the Dental Service where required at the AWH Credentialing Committee.
  • Undertake duties in a professional manner, including responding to enquiries, displaying and encompassing the values associated with AWH and act as a role model within the dental team. - Co-chair and actively participate in team meetings and other meetings as required.

 

Skills and experience

  • 1. Tertiary qualifications in Dentistry recognised by the Dental Board of Australia and registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA).
  • 2. Demonstrated high performance and competence in all clinical aspects of dentistry with sound clinical reasoning, advanced problem solving skills and extensive experience with the management of complex patient presentations.
  • 3. Previous senior dental clinical leadership experience with knowledge and commitment to public dentistry principles and the value based model of care.
  • 4. High level interpersonal, verbal and written communication and engagement skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • 5. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development with experience and willingness to participate in research opportunities, teaching, mentorship and supervision of dental team members and students.
  • 6. Proven ability to practice, promote and lead systems that support clinical governance and demonstrated experience in the application of quality improvement activities, including clinical review, incident management and clinical audits.
  • 7. Demonstrated commitment to roll modelling behaviours that are consistent with the key Albury Wodonga Health values of patient and client focused care, ethical behaviours, teamwork, equity, respect, compassion, accountability and trust.
  • 8. Current Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel for work purposes when required.
  • 9. Knowledge of OH&S legislation as it relates to employee’s responsibilities.
