About the role

Yooralla ComTEC has a vacancy at our Sunshine office with flexible working arrangements, for a passionate, positive relationship builder, with experience working in a transdisciplinary consultative model. working with people with disability to support their Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT) needs, to join our team as a permanent part time Speech Pathologist.

Yooralla’s Communication and Assistive Technology (ComTEC) supports children and adults with disability, their families and primary therapists across Victoria to access information about AAC and assistive technology.

ComTEC provides information, advice and training on a range of suitable assistive technology options for achieving goals in daily life, work, communicating, learning and recreation.

This fulfilling role will provide best practice, evidence-based speech pathology assistive technology consultation to a wide range of people with disability, their families and support teams, to achieve the best Assistive Technology solutions.

Your working days may involve the following, delivered in person or remotely:

  • Advisory sessions: individual consultations to work with people with disability, their family and primary therapist to explore assistive technology options to meet their goals and needs.
    ComTEC specialises in:
    • High Tech AAC e.g. Speech Generating Devices, communication apps on tablets to provide a backup or alternative when it is difficult to get your message across using speech;
    • Technology and support for device access. e.g.Alternative keyboard and mouse options, specialized software to assist literacy, learning, and leisure; and ways to adjust settings to make using things easier, safer, and more effective
    • Accessible home controls e.g. Mainstream and specialised solutions to enable people to perform functions such as change channels on the TV, manage lighting functions, operation of heating and cooling systems and other operations.
  • Training: training sessions provided to therapists and families on how to set up and get the best out of their equipment such as speech generating devices, communication apps on an iPad, computer software, computer access and mounting systems.  These can be one-off sessions or a series of ongoing training sessions.
  • Support to implement assistive technology:  individual support and mentoring provided to therapists in relation to how to implement speech generating devices, apps, computer software, computer access and mounting systems.  These can be one-off sessions or a series of ongoing support sessions.
  • Short-term hire equipment library: supporting equipment loans from our short-term library. 
  • working part of an interdisciplinary team of Specialist Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists,

About You

You’ll be an established and enthusiastic Speech Pathologist with a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, good interpersonal skills, and ability to engage people with a disability, motivate them and build their capability. You’ll have an ability to work in partnership with children and adults with a disability to set and achieve goals, and to work collaboratively with the person, their family and their primary therapist to explore AAC and assistive technology options.

To be successful in this role you’ll share Yooralla’s values and have:

  • experience working within a transdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team model
  • experience working with people with disability and AAC and assistive technology
  • the ability to build positive relationships with customers and their families
  • a willingness to improve on your clinical practice – including the ability to self-reflect and a focus on developing clinical skills in areas you’re not familiar with
  • care for the work you do and for the people you work with
  • competency in a variety of IT platforms, particularly client management systems
  • good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Speech Pathology Australia membership
  • an Australian driver’s licence and own vehicle, and a willingness to travel [[across X region Melbourne or around the X region]] as required
