Vascular surgeons specialise in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of diseases of the blood vessels.
Most vascular surgeon are involved in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions affecting circulation and the vascular system, including the arteries, veins and lymphatic system. In most cases, however, a neurosurgeon or a cardiac surgeon will perform procedures related to vascular conditions of the heart and brain.
Common procedures performed by vascular surgeons include surgeries to treat varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, atherosclerosis, aneurysms, and embolisms. They may also work as part of a surgical trauma team to repair vascular damage caused by bullet wounds, car accidents or other physical trauma.
