144721 - Cabrini GP Lecture Series 2018 - Term 4 Lecture 4 Topic: Update on DVT and pulmonary embolism e-learning

  • : Online

This online video of Cabrini's GP Lecture is available via https://praxhub.com at no cost. This lecture entitled Update on Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis is designed to educate GP’s on the key modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Analyse the diagnostic dilemmas and pitfalls of VTE imaging and evaluate currently available treatments, dosing algorithms and safety issues in the prevention and management of anticoagulant-associated bleeding.

Relevance to General Practice

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms most often in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm (known as deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and travels in the circulation, lodging in the lungs (known as pulmonary embolism, PE). Together, DVT and PE are known as VTE - a dangerous, potentially deadly medical condition. Part of a proposed National Strategy into the management and prevention of VTE includes promoting hospital and community education programs to create awareness of the VTE prevention guidelines and enhance understanding of VTE risk assessment. In 2008, an estimated 15 000–23 000 Australians experienced venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. The diagnosis, treatment and management of venous thromboembolism prophylaxis are increasingly becoming the responsibility of the general practitioner.
