165288 - Eyes: Preventable causes of Vision Loss and the role of the GP

  • : Online

In this hands on workshop, GP's will gain deeper understanding of ocular disease while using the most current diagnostic tools and seeing the current treatments for preventing/reducing vision loss. Demonstrate your understanding of the critical role of GP's in improving ocular health outcomes by producing a personalised protocol/system you can use within your local area/region as part of daily practice.

Relevance to General Practice

Vision impairment is a significant public health issue with 453,000 Australians living with a visual impairment or blindness, 90% of which is said to be preventable or treatable. Some ocular health findings indicate systemic disease and common systemic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and autoimmune diseases increase the risk of vision loss from ocular disease or complications.

There is an exponential increase in visual loss with increasing age from the leading causes of blindness (macula degeneration, glaucoma and cataract) and with aging population especially in regional areas, best patient outcomes will come from a multi-disciplinary approach for timely detection and treatment.

Learning outcomes
  • Differentiate the leading causes of preventable vision loss and their systemic risk factors across all ages
  • Identify those patients with increased risk of vision loss and structure an appropriate schedule for ocular health reviews based on those risk profiles.
  • Construct a reference guide with standard procedures using course materials to identify effective pathways to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Undertake a preliminary visual assessment that can be implemented in daily practice
  • Identify different diagnostic equipment and tools used in optometric/ophthalmology practice and distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.
