188124 - Adult Vaccination Update

  • : Online

Presented by Dr Peter Eizenberg, the Adult Vaccination Update will cover topics including:

Recommendations for the 2019 influenza season
Measles outbreak news and updated recommendations
Zostavax and Pneumococcal advice
Expanded availability of free adult hepatitis B vaccination
The GP role in active surveillance and reporting Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI’s)

Relevance to General Practice

Despite the availability of free vaccines for large numbers of the Australian adult population, uptake and coverage estimates remain low,
particularly for vulnerable groups at increased risk of exposure and infection due to communicable diseases, such as refugees, elderly people and Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people.
To ensure eligible adults are offered vaccination by their GP, it is important to ensure GPs have the opportunity to update skills and knowledge on available vaccines and how to identify which patients can benefit from adult vaccination.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify which vaccines are available and recommended for older adults and vulnerable populations
  • Identify eligibility criteria for adolescent, adult & elderly patients to benefit from available Govt-funded vaccines (NIP & VIC Govt)
  • Review recommendations for adult immunisation for protection against seasonal influenza, hep B, invasive pneumococcal disease, pertussis, measles & shingles
  • Demonstrate awareness of how to manage Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI), reporting AEFI’s and the GP role in active surveillance
