112013 - Remote Emergency Care Course (REC)

  • : Online

The Remote Emergency Care Course (REC) is designed to enable the health workforce to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to respond with confidence to emergency situations and to deliver safe and quality care in the remote and rural setting.
REC is designed to meet the learning needs of the remote and isolated health workforce who maybe required to provide emergency care to the critically ill or injured.

Relevance to General Practice

GPs in rural and remote areas require a higher level of emergency care skills due to lower numbers of GPs, reduced access to specialist services, and the logistic and geographic difficulties of evacuating seriously ill patients. There is also a higher incidence of farming, mining, industrial and motor vehicle accidents, as well as greater access to firearms in isolated areas. GPs may also be required to treat acute conditions outside of the practice or hospital setting, such as a collapse on a street or an accident site.

Learning outcomes
  • Demonstrate the principles of management of the acutely ill and traumatised patients in the remote health setting.
  • Describe and implement a systematic patient assessment.
  • Explain the different requirements of ill or injured patients through the life span including paediatric and obstetric patients.
  • Describe the application of the principles used in managing an incident involving multiple casualties.
  • Perform basic life support as per Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.
