114026 - Prescribing Opioids
- : Online
Prescribing Opioids is a 3-hour online education activity. The broad goals are to enhance participants skills and confidence in:
• identifying patients who are drug-dependent (or at risk of this) or drug-seeking, and ways to minimise harm
• establishing boundaries with patients and managing their expectations about opioids
• understanding lawful and good practice prescription of opioids.
Perceptions among doctors about prescribing opioids for chronic non-cancer pain have highlighted important educational gaps. In addition to intentional misuse of medications, it’s recognised that many patients are being prescribed long-term opioids inappropriately and at excessive doses.(3,5,6) Reasons for inappropriate prescribing include failure to identify the medication as inappropriate; inertia where continuing to prescribe seems less trouble; hesitancy about the management of pain; time pressures; and patient resistance to deprescribing.(2) It is critical to any effective management initiative that GPs are provided with effective resources, education and support to obtain better health outcomes for patients.
