Relevance to General Practice

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the prevalence of obesity worldwide has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2016, nearly two billion adults, and 340 million children and adolescents were overweight or obese.1 The dramatic increase in overweight and obesity has been attributed to an increase in the availability and consumption of energy-dense foods, and a decrease in physical activity. The health consequences of overweight and obesity include increased risks of non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis.
