119123 - Gastroenterology for GPs

  • : Online

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine which deals with disorders of the stomach and intestines. The goal of this course is to improve management of upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, small-bowel bleeding, and obscure GI bleeding. The content of the course is dynamic, addressing the fundamentals of quality and safe practice as well as emerging trends and evidence. This course is an online, self-directed CME program that provides a way for medical practitioners to access outstanding content focusing on areas such as Gastroenterology surgery and physiology. The aim of the course is to raise awareness of the topic of gastrointestinal issues such as pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and to upskill GPs in how to manage it, or at least know when to refer their patients to a gastroenterologist

Relevance to General Practice

There’s a chance that patients presenting with common gastrointestinal problems may in fact be suffering from a pancreatic disease such as chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic exocrine insufficiency . It is important to raise awareness of pancreatic disease in general practice, and alert GPs to the fact that patients presenting to them with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms (that could be mild) could have a more sinister underlying disease as the cause.
