119132 - General Surgery for GPs - Part 1

  • : Online

The online CME course is designed to expand your knowledge and capabilities from a surgical perspective through a review of new developments, medical guidelines and therapeutic options including non-conventional approaches. Highly focused case-based reviews are designed to increase competency in the general surgery field.

Relevance to General Practice

General surgery, despite its name, is the surgical specialty that focuses on surgical treatment of abdominal organs, and often include endocrine surgery, breast surgery and hernia surgery. According to the Medical Board of Australia, Medical practitioners who are engaged in any form of medical practice are required to participate regularly in continuing professional development (CPD) that is relevant to their scope of practice in order to maintain, develop, update and enhance their knowledge, skills and performance to ensure that they deliver appropriate and safe care. There is a need for professional development in the area of general surgery. In 2015–16 (excluding the Australian Capital Territory), the most common surgical specialties for patients admitted from public hospital waiting lists were General surgery (surgery on organs of the abdomen). Given that the specialty of a general surgeon is primary healthcare, then it is imperative that they are kept abreast of new treatments.
