119198 - Point of Care Lung Ultrasound

  • : Online

This 2-day program has been developed for clinicians interested in ultrasound techniques in the examination of the lungs and pleural space. This intensive program provides participants with tuition in basic physical principles, understanding of sonographic planes, terminology, measurements and probe manipulation skills. The techniques involved in examining the pleura and using ultrasound needle guidance in thoracocentesis pleural drainage will be addressed using our thoracocentesis phantom.

Relevance to General Practice

Point of care ultrasound is a well stablished diagnostic tool at emergency departments and intensive care units. Acute respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, pulmonary oedema, pneumothorax and pleural effusion can be accurately diagnosed, monitored and, to same extent, treated under the guidance of portable ultrasound machines. Pulmonary ultrasound continues evolving and its application in respiratory conditions are strongly supported by a variety of clinical trials.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimization while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximize diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Recognize the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
  • Perform guided vascular access and lung ultrasound
