121086 - Identifying patients with dementia

  • : Online

There is much more to dementia than memory loss. The term dementia describes a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. It is not one specific disease. Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and interferes with the person’s normal social or working life.

This activity will focus on identifying and appropriately investigating the signs of early dementia, evaluating the differential diagnoses for patients with declining cognitive function, communicating a diagnosis of dementia and providing education on risk reduction by lifestyle modification.

This activity has been developed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners with expert input from Dementia Training Australia (DTA) and the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. This activity has been supported by Dementia Australia and funded by the Australian Government Aged Care Service Improvement and Healthy Ageing Grant.

Relevance to General Practice

Dementia is currently the second leading cause of death of Australians and it is predicted that by 2025 the total cost of dementia will increase to $18.7 billion. General Practitioners (GPs) are usually the first contact when concerns about thinking or memory arise. GPs play a crucial role in identifying individuals at risk of dementia and in risk reduction by lifestyle modification. Overcoming the barriers to timely and accurate diagnosis of dementia in primary care is essential.

Tempo activities are designed as quick, 30 minute activities (when both the Overview and Interactive activity are completed) but recognise the additional effort GPs undertake when utilising the supplemental resources provided. Hence, this activity has been approved by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Quality Improvement and Continuing Professional Development (QI&CPD) Program for 2 Category 2 point in the 2017-2019 triennium.
