127181 - Seasonal Influenza Immunisation: Strategies for Older Adults

  • : Online

A Category 2, 1 hour online case study based program on seasonal Influenza Immunisation for the older adult population

Relevance to General Practice

In temperate climates, influenza epidemics occur mainly during the winter season. In tropical regions, such as Northern Australia, influenza occurs continually throughout the year. Worldwide, influenza epidemics cause an estimated 3-5 million cases of severe illness and 300,000 to 500,000 deaths annually. In Australia and other industrialised countries, most of these deaths are among people age 65 years and older.

Age-related decline in immune function impairs both the ability to resist influenza infection and to respond to influenza vaccination, with serious consequences for the older adult population.

Learning outcomes
  • Discuss the burden of influenza in adults aged 65 and older
  • Describe the mechanisms by which influenza vaccine products developed for older adults offer an advantage
