Relevance to General Practice

Most babies presenting with low muscle tone in general practice do not have an underlying neurological or muscular problem. However, in a small number, hypotonia is a symptom of a serious neurological or muscular disorder. Distinguishing between benign and pathological hypotonia and between central and peripheral causes is key to initiating an appropriate diagnostic pathway and is discussed in this article.
