Relevance to General Practice

An increased frequency with which opioid analgesics are being prescribed, particularly in the treatment of non-cancer chronic pain, has seen an associated rise in the incidence of opioid-related harms in the community. A 2015 Australian study of 645 GP vocational trainees found little evidence of trainees using any addiction-risk mitigation strategies and reported 15 instances of opioid analgesic prescribing for dependency indications.
In the 16–17 financial year, the third most common reason MDA National Members sought support in practice was for advice on consent.
A study of the occurrence of bullying in the Australian medical workforce surveyed 747 doctors. Of the responding GPs, 21% indicated experiencing bullying. Similar results were found in the most recent beyondblue study of doctors’ and medical students’ mental health. Between 2013 and 2017, 12 complaints relating to doctors’ behaviour were referred to the AHPRA performance and professional standards panel.
