To provide guidance for general practitioners on the management of female reproductive system disorders

Relevance to General Practice

Women account for 56% of all general practice consultations; 12% of presentations are for problems affecting the reproductive system.2 Common reasons for such presentations include genital check-ups and cervical screening, pregnancy, pregnancy-related problems, contraceptive advice, and menstrual problems.
Menorrhagia affects about 20% of women, and pelvic pain about 15%. Referrals to obstetricians and gynaecologists occur at a rate of 0.8 per 100 consultations with women, and these are for conditions such as ovarian cysts and endometriosis.
As the first point of contact, general practitioners are required to manage the various presentations relating to the female reproductive system, and identify those problems requiring referral to emergency services or specialists. This issue of check includes case studies on some common presentations relating to the female reproductive system.
